When you take the PSAT/NMSQT, you’ll see two different math sections: one where calculators are not allowed, and one where you can use them. A calculator isn’t required to do well, but it can definitely make certain problems faster and easier. The good news is that most scientific and graphing calculators are approved, and even simple four-function calculators can be used (though they’re not the best choice). What’s not allowed? Anything with internet, communication, or camera features—so no phones, tablets, or smartwatches. If you bring something that isn’t permitted, you won’t be able to use it, and it could even affect your test. The best approach is to bring a calculator you’re already comfortable with and make sure it has fresh batteries. Knowing these rules ahead of time helps you avoid surprises and keeps you focused on what really matters—showing what you know on test day.
